How I’m Getting 4 People From Heathrow to Southampton for About $73
When I started planning our first trip to Europe, getting the flights and cruise booked felt like the biggest part of the job.
Then I realized something:
We still had to get four people from Heathrow Airport to Southampton.
Our cruise leaves from Southampton, England, but our overnight flight from the U.S. arrives at London Heathrow at 9:40 a.m. on Thursday, December 3. Our cruise doesn’t leave until the next day, December 4.
That meant I needed to figure out the easiest—and hopefully reasonably priced—way to get four people and all of our luggage from Heathrow to Southampton.
And this is exactly the kind of little travel expense that can quietly make a “cheap” trip much more expensive.
The option I found: National Express
After looking at transportation options, I found a direct coach from Heathrow Airport Terminals 2 & 3 to Southampton Coach Station at Harbour Parade.
The price that caught my attention was:
£53.60 total for all four passengers.
At the current exchange rate while I’m writing this, that’s approximately $73 USD total, although exchange rates change.
That works out to roughly:
£13.40 per person — about $18 per person.
For getting four people from Heathrow all the way to Southampton, I thought that was pretty reasonable.
But I almost chose the wrong departure time
Initially, I saw an 11:00 a.m. coach.
It looked great:
11:00 a.m. — Heathrow
1:00 p.m. — Southampton
2-hour trip
0 changes
£53.60 for four people
Our flight is scheduled to land at 9:40 a.m., so technically there would be 1 hour and 20 minutes between landing and the coach leaving.
But then I started thinking about what “landing at 9:40” actually means.
The plane has to get to the gate. We have to get off. Then there is immigration/passport control, baggage claim, finding our way through an airport we’ve never been to before, and locating the coach.
And that’s assuming our overnight flight arrives exactly on time.
Suddenly, that 1 hour and 20 minutes didn’t sound very generous.
Then I found the 12:30 p.m. coach
This was the option that made much more sense to me.
The later coach was:
12:30 p.m. — Heathrow
2:20 p.m. — Southampton
1 hour 50 minutes travel time
0 changes
£53.60 total for four people
Same price.
But instead of giving ourselves only 1 hour and 20 minutes after our scheduled landing, we’d have 2 hours and 50 minutes.
For me, that’s worth it.
We’re already arriving in England one day before the cruise, so there really isn’t a benefit to rushing to Southampton at 11:00 a.m.
I’d rather have extra time at Heathrow than spend the end of an overnight flight staring at the clock wondering whether we’re going to miss a bus.
Why we’re going to Southampton the day before the cruise
This was another deliberate decision.
Our cruise doesn’t depart until Friday, December 4, but we’re scheduled to arrive in England Thursday morning.
That means we’ll spend Thursday night in Southampton.
Yes, that adds the cost of a hotel.
But I didn’t want our entire cruise depending on an international flight arriving on time the morning the ship leaves.
If our flight is delayed several hours, we still have some breathing room.
And if everything goes according to plan, we should arrive in Southampton around 2:20 p.m., check into our hotel, eat, rest after the overnight flight, and wake up the next morning already in the city where our cruise departs.
For our first trip to Europe, that sounds much less stressful.
The transportation cost surprised me
This is one of the reasons I wanted to document the actual numbers from this trip.
Before researching it, “fly into London and then travel to Southampton” sounded like another expensive part of the vacation.
But for four people:
Heathrow → Southampton: £53.60 total
At today’s exchange rate, that’s approximately:
$73 total
or about:
$18 per person.
That’s much less than I initially imagined we’d spend getting four people from the airport to Southampton.
Of course, the exchange rate and coach fares can change, so those dollar amounts are only approximate. I’m documenting the prices I’m seeing while planning our December 2026 trip.
This is becoming my strategy for planning Europe
I’m learning that comparing the whole trip matters much more than looking at one price.
When I originally started planning our vacation, one of the alternatives I considered was simply driving to Baltimore and taking a cruise from there.
No international flight. No Heathrow. No transportation to Southampton.
It sounded like it should automatically be the cheaper choice.
But once I started comparing the actual cruise fares and what we’d get for the money, the difference wasn’t nearly as dramatic as I expected.
That’s how this whole Europe trip started.
And now I’m going through each additional expense—airfare, transportation, hotel, cruise fare and everything else—to see what the trip will actually cost our family of four.
So far, the numbers have surprised me.
What I’ll break down next

Because that’s the comparison that changed my mind about where we were going in the first place.
